Liebes Forum,

Coconut oil
Because of coconut oil’s high saturated-fat content — it contains about 86 per cent, one third more than butter (at 52 per cent) — its heart-healthy image is unfounded, according to Andrew Freeman and his colleagues. Linda Main says that many callers to the Heart UK helpline have found their cholesterol levels had soared after they started to use more coconut oil. “Coconut oil contains a lot of saturated fatty acids, mainly as lauric and myristic acid, which potentially raise both total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol more than other fatty acids,” she says. “We strongly advise people who want to lower their blood cholesterol to avoid adding it to cooking and certainly not use it as a dietary supplement.”
